Shields (Mechanics & Counters)
Shields can make a glass cannon enemy feel like a tank. Learn why burst isn't enough and how to build a shield-breaking engine.
What it is
Shields add a defensive layer that protects an enemy's health bar. Until the shield is broken, your core damage often hits with reduced efficiency or is fully blocked.
Pure burst damage (slow, big hits) can struggle here because if you don't break the shield fast enough, it effectively mitigates your biggest attacks.
Common Mistakes
- Only stacking Burst: Big hits are great for execution, but bad for stripping layers.
- Low Uptime: Lacking slows means the shielded enemy walks out of range before you strip the defense.
- Single Target Focus: A pack of shielded enemies can overwhelm a single-target carry.
Counter Roles
Sustained DPS
High attack speed units that apply constant pressure to strip shields quickly.
Control (Slows)
Crucial to keep the target in the "kill zone" long enough for the shield to break.
Utility Breaker
A dedicated slot for a unit with "shield breaking" or multi-hit mechanics.
Upgrade Priority
- Secure Core Carry: Always upgrade your main damage dealer first. They need to kill the enemy once the shield is down.
- Unlock Utility: Get your shield breaker to a level where they have decent attack speed.
- Add Control: Upgrade slows if you find enemies are leaving range just as their shield breaks.
Swap Triggers
- "Kill Time" Increases: If enemies traverse 50% of the map before taking health damage, you need more shield breaking.
- Shielded Bosses: If a boss appears with a massive shield, swap a flex slot to a pure single-target sustained DPS.
